The Glasgow Commonwealth Games moves onto it's third day today and the quest for medals is getting heated up every hour. England topped the medal standings on the opening day of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 17 medals in total with six gold medals, seven silver medals and four bronze before the evening sessions started at Glasgow yesterday.

Australia with their success at the pool, were behind them with five gold medals, three silver and seven bronze medals. The hosts, Scotland were also following in closely with four gold, three silver and three bronze medals

Sri Lanka had mixed fortunes during the opening day of the 20th Commonwealth Games which is moving onto its third day today. Sri Lankan shuttlers will be in action at the indoor stadium courts, testing their skills against much fancied Malaysia in the group play stage of mixed team events.

India launched their campaign in the Glasgow Games with dominant performances which came in impressive fashion when weightlifter Sanjita Kumkumakcham stole the limelight by winning the country its first gold medal on Thursday.

She lifted a total of 173 kilogrammes while her fellow teammate Chanu Saikhom lifted three kilos less than Sanjita to win the silver. Twenty three-year old Sri Lankan Chamari Warnakulasuriya, competing in the same category, was disqualified during her group A event last night after failing to clear her opening weight of 62 kilograms in the snatch category and was disqualified from the event.

In the final weightlifting event of the day, both athletes representing Sri Lanka failed to complete the event. Competing in the Men's 56 Kg event, Thilanka Palangasinghe cleared 105 kilogrammes (snatch) but could not lift his choice of 135 kilograms at Clean and Jerk.

Sangeeth Sirisenage also failed to impress when he failed to put over the two mandatory weights. Twenty five-year old Indian Sukhen Dey lifted 248 kilograms to seal India's dominance in weightlifting on Thurday night.

Earlier that evening, In the men's squash round of 64, three Sri Lankans were in action and none of them progressed to the next round. Gihan Suwaris lost to Martin Knight of New Zealand (3-0) while Dilshan Argentina Authentic jersey Gunawardena was beaten by Alister Walker (BOT) with 3-0 sets. Ravindu Laksiri also failed to impress and went down fighting gave a good fight against Colin Ramasra of Trinidaed & Tobagoand went down 3-2.

Gihan Suwaris lost out New Zealand's Martin Knight 3-0 in a men's first round squash game.

Sri Lanka also competed in the men's and women's team table tennis event with the Sri Lankan Ladies losing out to the Singapore ladies 3 matches to 0.

However the Men managed to beat Germany Autentic jersey the Seychelles 3-0 and before losing out to Singapore 3-0 in their next set of matches.

Brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, competing in the Men's Individual Triathlon, shared the podium with Olympic champion Alistair taking first place and Gold (1:48:50) and Johnathan claiming Second and Silver (1:49:01). Richard Murray of South Africa came in third to clinch the Bronze medal (1:50:21).

In Judo Colin Oates won GOLD in the Men's 66kg, the 25th gold medal England has won in Judo. He came up against Andreas Krassas (CYP) in the 66kg final. Siyabulela Mabula (RSA) took bronze, South Africa's first ever medal in judo.

Following the lead of the Brownlee brothers, the Renicks sisters of Scotland also won gold and silver respectively. Kimberley Renicks had claimed Scotland's first gold defeating India's Shushila Likmabam in the 48kg final of the 48kg women's judo final while her sister Louise beat England's Kelly Edwards in the 52kg final later in the day.

Hannah Miley broke the Women's 400m Individual Medley record with four minutes 31.76 seconds and set a new Commonwealth Games record. A stunning final 100m from Miley left Aimee Willmott (ENG) with silver.

Rowan Crothers broke his own World Record in the Men's para-sport S9 100m Arsenal jersey 2015 Freeestyle and the first gold, Silver and Bronze in a single competition at this year's Games for Australia. Crothers won in 54.58, Matthew Cowdrey (AUS) took silver in 56.33 and Brenden Hall (AUS) the bronze in 56.85.

Team Scotland's Ross Murdoch and Michael Jamieson both claimed gold and silver for Scotland respectively in the Men's 200m Breaststroke with Murdoch swimming one of the fastest races this year to defy his compatriot with a time of 2:07.30 which is a new Commonwealth Games record.
